第178回例会(英語例会)

The 178th regular meeting was held on the 2nd of June.

■"Word of the day "
The purpose of " Word of the day is to increase our vocabulary. Members are encouraged to use the word introduced as many as possible. The word was an adverb , " truly". It is used to emphasize that a particular statement, feeling, etc is sincere or genuine. So it means " very " or "sincerely ".

■"Prepared speeches"
Prepared speeches are speeches made according to the manuals published by Toastmasters International. A speaker should make a speech based on the objectives on the manuals. In the meeting, we had three speakers.

The titles of each speakers are shown below,
#1 Work out
#2 How do you learn English?
#3 Strict surfing life

The first speaker, Mr. O. recommended workout, " 筋トレ" in Japanese. According to his speech,Workout brings lots of good feedbacks, especially it is good to gain your confidence.There are five reasons. 1. Cool. 2.Be hot. 3.Raise you up. 4.Almighty feeling 5. Healthy.
Mr. O showed us words and pictures in his sketchbook which worked very effectively, and also he " is" muscular.

The second speaker, Mr. M explained his 2 years of his English learning experience which is called Mr. M method named after his own name. It sounds very humorous, doesn't it? When Mr. M was a university student, he had a friend whose nickname was English monk because of his appearance, who accomplished a perfect score in TOEIC! Mr. M asked the friend the tips of learning English. The answer was NHK radio program, "Kisoeigo ". Mr. M spent his first year listening to Kisoeigo on the way to and from his work. As for the second year, he recommended to watch American dramas in English, with English subtitles. He chose a drama called "Twenty-four". In these ways, he accomplished getting a high score in TOEIC, over 800!

The third speaker, Ms. T told us how attractive surfing is and also several warnings to keep away from dangers, such as rip currents, 離岸流 in Japanese, not climbing up on tetrapods, or not riding on a wave that someone is or is going to be on, etc. She used to go surfing several times a month until her friend moved. She's planning to go surfing again very soon.

■"Table topics"
Table topics are in a style of instant and improvised speeches. The Table topics master gives the audience a topic and assign a question concerning with it to each speaker. The speaker MUST make a speech about it in 2 minutes. It's a good practice to develop quick response skills. The questions are shown below.

#1 What's the biggest event of Reiwa Era?
#2 As Reiwa means "beautiful harmony", what is a truly beautiful thing in your life?
#3 What kind of songs do you feel harmonious?
#4 What do you want to do in this new era?

The 1st speaker's biggest event so far is having joined in the Fuchu Toastmasters Club.
The 2nd speaker and his wife truly enjoy raising plants and vegetables, which he found as the beautiful thing.
The 3rd speaker thinks jazz is truly harmonious.
The 4th speaker wants to give many more speeches at this club.

■ Evaluation
In Evaluation session, the evaluators pointed out strong points of the prepared speeches and gave suggestions to the prepared speakers to make their speeches better. Evaluators are required to have skills to listen to speeches carefully and to summarize the points in limited time.

■ Award Presentation
All attendees selected the best speakers for each session by voting and the
MC gave the awards to the best speakers. They are shown below.
The best prepared speech speaker was #1 speaker, Mr. O.
The best Table topics speaker was #2 speaker, Mr. K.
The best evaluator was Ms. L.
