第186回例会(英語例会)

191006.jpgThe big typhoon hit Japan every weekend. Especially Typhoon #15 demolished many houses in Chiba area. And this weekend Typhoon #19 attacked Kanto region. We expressed our heartfelt sympathy to victims of the disaster. In such a circumstance, I feel happy that we are able to have fuchu toast master meeting with good company.

■ Prepared Speech Prepared Speech is a speech according to manuals published by Toastmasters International. A speaker should make a speech based on the objectives on the manuals. In the meeting, we had three prepared speakers. Are You Happy? Installation Art Let's enjoy autumn!

The first speaker explained "World Happiness Report 2019" produced by the United Nations. Japan was ranked 58 out of 156 countries. I was surprised to know the fact, but the fact gave me a good opportunity to think about real happiness. The second speaker demonstrated Installation Art. The art means that objects are installed on the floors or walls in the exhibition space. She showed us various types of Installation Art. Although it is thought to be difficult to understand, her speech helped us to see it. The last speaker talked about her favorite landscape and food in the autumn. She said gingko leaves in Showa Commemorative National Government Park are amazing. Furthermore, autumn leaves being lighted in Rikugien at night are awesome. Her speech encouraged me to go and find autumn beauty.

■Table Topics Table Topics is a style of instant and impromptu speeches. Table Topics master gives the audience a topic and assign member as a speaker. The speakers MUST speak about the topic about two minutes. It's a good practice to develop quick response skill. In this session, the Table Topics master gave four topics as shown in below.

If you give a present for your dad and mam, what do you give? Please tell us the things which you won't buy yourself? Did you buy anything before tax become 10%? What do you want now?

The speaker for topic#1 told that he will make a call. Buzzing a ring from their son is the best present for his parents. The speaker for topic#2 said he would buy wine himself. Autumn is the best season for new wine. The speaker for topic#3 bought daily goods following advice from her husband. Good relationship! The speaker for topic#4 wants to travel by himself. We long for making a solo journey.

■ Evaluation In Evaluation session, the evaluators pointed out strong points of the prepared speeches and gave suggestions to them to make their speeches more effective. This role is so beneficial to sharpen the skills to listen to speeches carefully and to summarize the points in limited time. Evaluators gave heart-warming comment to the speakers, which encouraged them to make better speech at the next time.

■ Award Presentation All attendees selected the best speakers for each session by voting and the toastmaster of the day gave the awards to the best speakers. Congratulations to all!
